Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and what does it mean for my child?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by challenges in social communication and interaction, as well as restricted and repetitive behaviors and interests. It is referred to as a "spectrum" because the symptoms and severity can vary widely among individuals. Children with ASD may struggle with nonverbal communication, initiating and sustaining conversations, and forming meaningful relationships. They may exhibit repetitive behaviors and have strong interests in specific subjects. As behavior analyst, our role is to provide comprehensive assessments and interventions to support your child's unique needs and strengths. We will work together to develop an individualized behavior plan aimed at promoting communication, social skills, and adaptive behaviors. Early intervention and evidence-based strategies can significantly improve outcomes and help your child thrive despite the challenges associated with ASD. We will focus on fostering their development, independence, and overall well-being to help them reach their full potential. Throughout this journey, I am committed to collaborating with you as a parent to ensure that your child receives the best possible care and support to navigate the challenges of ASD.
  • What is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and how can therapy benefit my child?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific and evidence-based discipline that focuses on understanding and modifying human behavior. It is widely used in various fields, including education, therapy, and behavior management. ABA principles and techniques are commonly employed to help individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities. ABA Therapy can enhance your child’s quality of life by focusing on understanding their behaviors, identifying the underlying reasons for those behaviors, and implementing evidence-based interventions. Based on a thorough assessment of your child's needs, we'll develop an individualized behavior plan tailored to their unique strengths and challenges. This plan may include strategies such as positive reinforcement, visual supports, social skills training, and behavior shaping techniques.
  • What can I expect from ABA Therapy?
In the initial stages of therapy, our team will focus on building a strong and positive relationship with your child through “play”. This rapport-building phase is crucial to establish trust and comfort between your child and our team. During this time, the RBT will engage in play-based interactions, incorporating your child's interests into the therapy sessions. The use of positive reinforcement and the creation of a safe and enjoyable environment aim to make therapy sessions engaging and rewarding for your child, encouraging active participation and learning. As rapport is solidified, we will gradually introduce more demands and begin targeting specific behaviors for improvement. We will then begin to implement the behavior intervention plan to reduce problem behaviors. This may lead to an "extinction burst," where the frequency, duration, and intensity of the targeted behaviors may temporarily increase. Additionally, new behaviors that were not previously observed might emerge during this period. It is essential to recognize that these extinction bursts are a natural part of the therapeutic process. As long as everyone involved remains consistent with the behavior intervention plan, the extinction bursts will gradually diminish, and improvements in behavior will be observed. Patience and adherence to the therapy plan are vital during this phase. Rest assured that our team is equipped to navigate these challenges and will continue to work collaboratively with your child and your family to achieve meaningful progress in the therapy journey.
  • Can you assist with parenting techniques or strategies for supporting my child's development across different settings?
We encourage parents to be actively involved in their child's therapy. We’ll provide guidance and training to parents/caregivers on implementing behavior plans effectively outside of therapy sessions. You will be provided with techniques and strategies that are consistent with the behavior plan. We'll equip you with tools and strategies to manage challenging situations and support your child's progress in different settings, including at home and in the community. In addition, with your consent we will maintain open communication with educators and other therapists to include sharing progress reports, strategies, and interventions to create a unified approach. This collaboration helps reinforce the skills learned during therapy and promotes generalization to various environments.
